What’s up at Smarter Diagnostics?

Effective diagnostic imaging plays a key role in the proper treatment of musculoskeletal injuries. This includes injuries to the Achilles tendon – a real bane among athletes. Smarter Diagnostics has created a tool that allows quick and efficient evaluation of Magnetic Resonance images of the Achilles tendon area. It allows orthopedic clinics to examine trauma patients much faster, but also to conduct screening that will reduce the risk of such injuries in the highest risk groups, such as athletes.

The health service is facing a shortage of radiologist doctors. As a result, diagnostics are difficult to access and waiting times are too long. Under such circumstances, it is also impossible to use diagnostics for injury prevention as part of preventive screening. Solutions are needed to give radiologists support in the tedious process of analyzing MR images and the time-consuming procedure of creating reports, while reducing diagnostic errors.

Unfortunately, limb-related disease areas are not prioritized, as these problems are usually not directly life-threatening. Technology startups building their product portfolios, as well as large companies, are initially focusing on the biggest medical challenges when developing proprietary solutions, namely the areas of cardiology, neurology and oncology. In 2020, some 120 AI-based solutions in the area of radiology were already certified under FDA or CE guidelines, and only 17 solutions in the area of musculoskeletal imaging (of which only four were certified) were reported.

Algorithms developed by Bartosz Borucki and Norbert Kapinski, in cooperation with the University of Warsaw, have already been applied in a series of pilot studies conducted at the Gamma Medical Center and the Sports Institute – National Research Institute, among others.

Smarter Diagnostics is currently looking for strategic partners – entities with whom it will jointly conduct pilot implementations of the developed solution, validate the tool and obtain feedback from users. It is also crucial to establish partnerships with Key-Opinion-Leaders – individuals from the fields of radiology, orthopedics, physiotherapy and sports, who would help popularize the solution offered by Smarter Diagnostics. Access to large imaging networks, teleradiology centers and radiology IT platform providers (PACS/RIS/Marketplace) will enable the company to build a solid business scaling path. Financing the company’s operations is not an issue at this stage, but as always in AI startups – more data is needed. And why? You’ll find out soon by following news about the company and our Fund.
